Brazilian PTO Launches the First Edition of the Brazilian Innovation and Development Index (IBID)
This August, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) launched the first edition of the Brazilian Innovation and Development Index (IBID). This index provides a detailed overview of innovation across Brazil, offering insights into the performance of local science, technology, and innovation from multiple angles. The IBID uses the same methodology as the Global Innovation Index (GII) created by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In 2023, Brazil was ranked 49th globally by the GII, a notable improvement that highlighted its progress over the years and its position as the leading innovator in Latin America.
Building on this global perspective, the IBID provides detailed metrics on innovation performance across Brazil’s five macro-regions and 27 states aiming to support the decision-making process for companies and governments, thus guiding efforts toward initiatives that genuinely promote economic development and social well-being through innovation.
Given Brazil’s continental dimensions and the significant diversity across its vast territory, the IBID is particularly valuable in facilitating comparisons between states and regions. It enables the identification of strengths and challenges within its seven pillars of innovation, helping to understand the factors that influence the rankings of each state and macro-region.
According to the IBID data, the national average is 0.291 on a scale from 0 to 1. The five most innovative state-level economies in Brazil are São Paulo (0.891), Santa Catarina (0.415), Paraná (0.406), Rio de Janeiro (0.402), and Rio Grande do Sul (0.401).
It is evident that São Paulo far outperforms all other states, excelling in every criterion and leading in innovation across all seven analyzed pillars. Additionally, the IBID shows that north-eastern states are achieving higher innovation levels than their income levels would suggest, while southern states are more effective at converting inputs into innovative products. This indicates that the national average doesn’t fully capture Brazil’s innovation landscape, as it overlooks the diverse regional realities, challenges, and potential across the country. As Brazil evolves, harnessing the unique innovative strengths of its regions and tailoring strategies to address specific regional challenges will be crucial for driving national progress.
