News | Geographical Indication – BRPTO grants Indication of Provenance for region producing açaí
The Brazilian PTO continues to work intensively with the recognition of Geographical Indications (GIs). The newest Indication of Provenance (IP) recognized by the BRPTO was the municipality of Feijó, in the State of Acre, for the production of açaí.
With the new GI, which was requested by Cooperativa de Produtores, Coletores e Batedores de Açaí de Feijó, the BRPTO reaches 116 Geographical Indications, of which 83 are Indication of Provenance and 33 Denominations of Origin.
The açaí fruit is cultivated and harvested in a traditional way specific to the region, aiming to preserve sustainability. See below some details of this cultivation and harvest:
- The açaí can only be harvested ripe
- Using the traditional method, the collector climbs the açaí tree, using an Amazonian tool called peconha, and removes the fruit clusters
- The fruits must be processed within a maximum of 24 hours after collection
Açaí is an identity food of Feijó. In the region, it is possible to find houses, facades, institutions, cars, and local taxis painted in purple. Feijó’s açaí is recognized for its quality and the municipality has a major event in honor of the fruit: the Feijó Açaí Festival, which takes place every year and has already had more than 24 editions.
