Optimization of Patent Processes: INPI Joins the Global PPH program.
On July 6, 2024, the Brazilian PTO (INPI) joined the Global Patent Prosecution Highway (Global PPH or GPPH) program as part of the 2023-2025 Action Plan within the National Intellectual Property Strategy. The program, administered by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), aims to establish multilateral cooperation among intellectual property offices. In total, 27 offices are committed to the plan, which primarily seeks to accelerate the patent application process by sharing formal examinations that indicate patentable material conducted by any member office.
With Brazil’s accession to the GPPH, the country now partners with 35 offices, compared to the previous bilateral PPH agreements with 23 offices.
The current PPH regulations, defined by INPI/PR Ordinance No. 78/2022, will remain in effect until a new Ordinance is published. The results of examinations from the new partner offices will only be applicable from that point forward. It is important to note that INPI is currently regulating this matter and will provide more information soon.
