The Brazilian PTO attends to meetings regarding the International Patent Classification

The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) has been contributing to the Expert Committee and the IPC Working Group for almost twenty years now, presenting over 50 projects within this period. Notably, in 2023, Brazil hosted the 9th edition of the Semiconductor Experts Meetings, where the discussion was focused on the creation of a new IPC classification for semiconductors.

In 2024, Brazil continues to actively contribute to the matter. In April, the BRPTO participated in two significant meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on discussions surrounding alterations to the International Patent Classification (IPC).

In the 10th Semiconductor Experts Meeting, the BRPTO was part of the group dedicated to discussions directed to the IPC classification regarding semiconductors and solid-state devices. The BRPTO also attended to the IPC Revision Working Group session, where projects aimed at the revision of classifications in electrical, mechanical, and chemical fields were deliberated.

These coworking projects resulted in remarkable decisions regarding the international IP scheme. Among the implemented changes  is the addition of the new H10 class, defined as “semiconductor devices; electric solid-state devices not otherwise provided for”, in substitution to partial symbols of the subclass H01L, which comprises “semiconductor devices not covered by class”. Additionally, three new subclasses are currently under study to be included in future versions of the IPC.
