Renewed INPI–EPO partnership reinforces international cooperation in patents
On April 3, 2025, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) and the European Patent Office (EPO) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding, renewing their technical and strategic cooperation for a five-year period. The agreement strengthens collaboration in key areas of mutual interest, with the goal of enhancing patent examination quality and efficiency while fostering innovation and economic growth.
Key elements of the partnership include:
- Promoting high-quality and efficient patent examination to support innovation and facilitate bilateral trade and investment between Brazil and Europe.
- Improving the processing of second filings through the effective use of EPO’s prior examination work within INPI’s national procedures, alongside the provision of training, tools, and legal-technical support by the EPO.
- Encouraging the use of patent information and related tools as valuable resources for innovation, commercialization, and technology transfer.
At Simões IP, we view this renewed partnership as a significant opportunity for applicants seeking protection in both regions, and as a step toward greater international alignment of intellectual property systems.
