Brazilian Geographical Indications to gain protection in European countries

During the 66th MERCOSUR staff meeting, officials announced that Brazilian geographical indications, including but not limited to cheese, coffee, cachaça, and arsenate, will be recognised in Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This protection is enshrined in the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) agreement.

In accordance with the terms of the agreement, 63 Brazilian geographical indications will be afforded protection within the jurisdiction of these countries. The recognition of new Brazilian geographical indications will also be facilitated. The indications include wines, cheeses, and denominations for Swiss chocolate and Swiss watches. It has been determined that Brazilian producers who have previously employed these names will be granted a sufficient period to effect the necessary adjustments.

It is anticipated that the agreement will be formally endorsed before the close of the current calendar year. Each country has its own process for approving the agreement. In the context of Brazil, this process encompasses both the executive and legislative branches, with the requisite approval being granted by the National Congress.
