Brazilian PTO partners with WIPO to Promote Gender Equality
Last week, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) collaborated with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to host the Gender Equity in Intellectual Property Forum: Policies and Institutional Actions in Latin America. Held at the National Historical Museum in Rio de Janeiro, the event was attended by representatives from 16 countries in the region and featured lectures and panel discussions on the topic.
In addition to the activities organized on August 7th and the following two days, the initiative included the presentation of WIPO’s Gender Equality Policy for the period 2024-2027. This policy aims to establish gender equality benchmarks across all the Organization’s activities and to demonstrate the benefits of these actions through data.
Thus, members of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and representatives from IP offices across Latin America gathered for this regional meeting to advance discussions on combating gender prejudice.
As highlighted by Rafaela Guerrante, Coordinator of BRPTO’s Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, the Brazilian Institute has been undertaking initiatives to promote gender equality since October 2022. Furthermore, the Coordinator emphasizes the importance of mentorship programs for women, the organization of events on this topic, and the proposal for a community of practice in Latin America.
