Denomination of Origin Luiz Alves (SC) for “cachaça”

On August 6, 2024, the BRPTO published the recognition of the Geographical Indication, in the Denomination of Origin form for the Luiz Alves (SC) region, which produces “cachaça”.
The “cachaça” production in Luiz Alves (SC) has several peculiarities, including the use of molasses as the raw material for fermentation instead of sugarcane juice.

In addition, local yeasts are used to provide a low-speed fermentation, which produces high-quality alcohols, and the unique yeast strains from each of the region’s stills provide unique aromas and flavors to the product, such as notes of almonds, honey, coffee and mineral traces.

Another important factor that characterizes the distinctiveness of the Luiz Alves beverage is the mild temperature and humid, temperate climate of the region, which also influence the “cachaça” quality, as they reduce the evaporation of water and thus maintain the desired alcohol content.

The prestigious Denomination of Origin Seal certifies the authenticity and quality of the product, guaranteeing that it is produced according to specific standards and with unique local ingredients. With this seal, the INPI has recognized 126 Geographical Indications in Brazil.
