Geographical Indication for the cheese of Autazes

Author Lucas Caputo

On September 10, 2024, INPI published the recognition of Geographical Indication, in the Indication of Origin form for the Autazes (AM) municipality, known as a cheese producer.

The production stands out for its bovine rennet cheese, made in floating cheese factories. This is a necessary adaptation due to the variations in river levels, which flood the plains throughout the year and change the goods transportation routes.

In this way, the cheese production in Autazes (AM) has several peculiarities, including the fact that it is handmade using raw milk and cooked pasta, and made by the producers themselves.

Therefore, the cheese produced in Autazes (AM) has a more solid consistency and doesn’t crumble or melt when fried, as well as offering a soft, distinctive flavor.

The Autazes Indication of Origin for the cheese product will recognize the reputation, quality and characteristics of this product and will communicate to the world that the region has the specialization and  capacity to produce differentiated products, of excellence and with a guarantee of origin. With this registration, the INPI has now recognized 129 GIs in Brazil.
