The Brazilin PTO Publishes 2024 Statistics
The INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) released the preliminary statistics for 2024. The highlight was the significant growth in trademark filings, which increased by 10.3% compared to 2023, reaching 444,037 registrations. There was also growth in other areas, such as industrial designs (3.1%), computer programs (25.5%), and integrated circuit topographies (500%). However, patent applications saw a slight decline of 0.8%, totaling 27,701 applications, along with decreases in technology contract applications (-22.5%) and geographical indications (-3.7%).
Between January and December 2024, clients from 82 countries sought protection for their patents with the INPI, with the United States leading invention patent applications (28%), followed by Brazil (23%), China (8%), Germany (6%), and Switzerland (4%). Most applications for utility models, trademarks, industrial designs, and technology contracts were filed by Brazilian companies and individuals.
In terms of grants, the INPI granted 12,914 patents, 166,063 trademarks, 4,093 industrial designs, and 5,168 computer programs, along with registering 721 technology contracts. A total of 16 geographical indications and six integrated circuit topographies were granted.
