Atlantic Forest: The Potential for Innovation and Sustainability Through Patents

Author Matheus Martinez

The Atlantic Forest, as a biome of rich biodiversity, has a high capacity for registering patents associated with native plant species, boosting conservation and the responsible use of these resources. A study conducted by the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest (INMA) highlights the increasing participation of foreign countries in patents for innovations within this biome, which accounts for 92% of patent involvement in innovations.

In addition to protecting the generated knowledge, patents can encourage investments in science and technology aimed at the sustainable exploitation of flora. Companies and institutions that hold patent rights have the security to invest in the development of new products, such as medicines and cosmetics, based on native plants, promoting sustainable use while generating economic benefits for the country.

The strategic use of patents is also crucial for strengthening the green economy and promoting regional development. In this regard, Brazil becomes one of the key countries for patent registration related to native plant species, as it boasts the highest biodiversity in the world spread across six biomes.

A study by INMA, in collaboration with the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), showed that of the 118 patent registrations for products and technologies created from 66 endemic plants of the Atlantic Forest, 97 were held by entities from other countries. China was the largest holder of patents, followed by the United States, European countries, and Japan, reflecting the growing trend in patent registrations associated with the biome.

Thus, the patent system becomes a mechanism that balances technological innovation and sustainability, contributing to environmental preservation and inclusive economic development. Patents play a fundamental role in leveraging natural resources and the sustainable development of a country by ensuring the protection of inventions resulting from research and the development of innovative technologies.

In conclusion, the Atlantic Forest stands out not only for its rich biodiversity but also for its potential for innovation and economic development through patent registration. The increasing foreign participation in this field underscores the need for responsible management of these resources.
